What to Do With All Those Summer Photos (Before They Get Lost)
Summer has a way of filling our camera rolls fast.
Vacations. Pool days. Ice cream stops. Family gatherings. Long evenings outside. The little everyday moments that somehow become the ones we treasure most.
Before you know it, you've taken hundreds, maybe even thousands, of photos.
And then life starts to shift.
Back-to-school shopping begins. Schedules fill up. Fall activities are around the corner.
Those summer photos that felt so important suddenly get buried under new ones.
The good news?
You don't need a giant organizing project before summer ends.
You just need a simple plan.
Step 1: Gather Your Summer Photos
Before you organize anything, take a few minutes to gather all of your summer photos.
Think about where they might be:
Your phone
Your spouse's phone
A camera or SD card
Shared albums
Cloud storage
Don't worry about organizing them yet.
The goal is simply to make sure you know where your summer memories are.
Step 2: Choose Your Favorites
This is my favorite step.
You don't need every photo.
Choose the ones that tell the story of your summer.
The laughing faces.
The messy moments.
The family traditions.
The quiet evenings.
The photos that instantly make you smile.
When you narrow your collection down to your favorites, everything else becomes easier.
Step 3: Clear Out the Clutter
Now spend a few minutes deleting the obvious extras.
Think:
blurry photos
duplicates
accidental screenshots
photos you'll never look at again
You don't have to be ruthless.
Just remove the photos that don't add to your story.
A little cleanup now makes your collection much more enjoyable later.
Step 4: Do Something With Your Favorite Photos
This is the step most people skip.
They organize their photos…
…and then leave them sitting in a folder or camera roll.
Instead, choose one simple way to enjoy them.
You could:
Create a "Summer 2026" album on your phone.
Add a few favorites to your digital photo frame.
Start a few pages in your family yearbook.
Print a handful of your favorite photos.
Your memories deserve to be seen, not just stored.
My End-of-Summer Routine
Every August, I spend a little time wrapping up our family's summer memories.
I gather our photos.
I choose my favorites.
I create a summer photo book.
I don't try to do everything in one afternoon.
I simply take one small step at a time.
Those little habits have made such a difference.
Instead of feeling overwhelmed by thousands of photos, I get to enjoy them throughout the year.
Don't Wait Until Next Summer
It's so easy to tell ourselves we'll organize our summer photos "later."
But later often turns into next year.
Or never.
Before the routines of fall take over, spend just a little time preserving the memories that made this summer special.
It doesn't have to be perfect.
It doesn't have to take hours.
Just gather your photos, choose your favorites, and do one small thing to make those memories easy to enjoy.
Your future self and your family will be so glad you did.
